Are you missing email? You may not be the only one. An article came up today on yahoo news about some Hotmail users reporting missing emails. Here’s the article from Yahoo! News:

“NEW YORK – Some users of Microsoft Hotmail are starting off the new year scrambling to get back e-mails of old. A chorus of frantic users has posted complaints on Microsoft’s online forum that all of their messages have disappeared.

“Please help me get them back,” wrote one user under the moniker ‘Zacgore’ in a post dated Saturday. “All my kids’ info and pictures are in there!”

Others complain that the majority of the e-mail in their inboxes was sent to their deleted mail folders instead. It is unclear from the posts how widespread the problem is. The free Web-based e-mail service is the world’s most used with about 360 million users globally, according to comScore Inc.

Windows Live support technicians have said in numerous threads that the Hotmail team is aware of the problem and working on a fix.

“At this point it appears to be a limited issue, and Microsoft is working with individual users who are impacted. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers,” Microsoft spokeswoman Catherine Brooker said in statement Saturday. She declined to disclose what caused the glitch. Microsoft’s forum contains 476 pages of complaints about lost and deleted e-mails that date back to early November.”

What should you do? Wait.

Within a few day, Microsoft should have everything up and running smoothly. In the meantime, switch to Gmail.

Just Kidding, but you should try Gmail out… I’ve been a proud gmail user for many years now and I can safely say the switchover was flawless and I’ve never had any problems with Gmail.

Have you ever logged into your email and it seems like someone has been there before you? If it seems that your account has been compromised, having a more secure password is a very important step toward protection. In fact, having a strong and secure password is important even if your account hasn’t been compromised.

Here is what Microsoft Online Safety says about Strong Passwords:

Keys to password strength: length and complexity

An ideal password is long and has letters, punctuation, symbols, and numbers.

Whenever possible, use at least 14 characters or more.

The greater the variety of characters in your password, the better.

Use the entire keyboard, not just the letters and characters you use or see most often.

Create a strong password you can remember

There are many ways to create a long, complex password. Here is one way that may make remembering it easier:

What to do

Suggestion

Example

Start with a sentence or two (about 10 words total).

Think of something meaningful to you.

Long and complex passwords are safest. I keep mine secret. (10 words)

Turn your sentences into a row of letters.

Use the first letter of each word.

lacpasikms (10 characters)

Add complexity.

Make only the letters in the first half of the alphabet uppercase.

lACpAsIKMs (10 characters)

Add length with numbers.

Put two numbers that are meaningful to you between the two sentences.

lACpAs56IKMs (12 characters)

Add length with punctuation.

Put a punctuation mark at the beginning.

?lACpAs56IKMs (13 characters)

Add length with symbols.

Put a symbol at the end.

?lACpAs56IKMs” (14 characters)

Test your password with a password checker

A password checker evaluates your password’s strength automatically. Try our secure password checker.

Protect your passwords from prying eyes

The easiest way to “remember” passwords is to write them down.
It is okay to write passwords down, but keep them secure. See 5 tips to keep your passwords secret.

Common password pitfalls to avoid

Cyber criminals use sophisticated tools that can rapidly decipher passwords.

Avoid creating passwords using:

Dictionary words in any language.
Words in all languages are vulnerable.

Words spelled backwards, common misspellings, and abbreviations.
Words in all languages are vulnerable.

Sequences or repeated characters.
Examples: 12345678, 222222, abcdefg, or adjacent letters on your keyboard (qwerty).

Personal information.
Your name, birthday, driver’s license, passport number, or similar information

For Christmas this year, I was trying to make music cd’s that I could give away as gifts to family and friends. In order to do so, I was using software on my MacBookPro that I use almost every day: iTunes. I put in a Staples Brand CD-R and clicked ‘Burn.’

Wikipedia Definition of CD-R: A CD-R (Compact Disc-Recordable) is a variation of the Compact Disc invented by Phillips and Sony. CD-R is a “Write Once Read Many” (WORM) optical medium, though the whole disk does not have to be entirely written in the same session…”

However, when the disc finished burning, instead of getting the normal chime that iTunes makes when the disc is finished, I got an error message! AN ERROR MESSAGE! “The attempt to burn a disc failed. An unknown error occurred.” I figured… “Maybe that disc was bad” so I took the next disc in the package and tried again.

–No Cigar!–

So, I decided to try a Memorex CD-R (That’s what I usually get) and it worked again! I wondered if anyone else had this problem, so I did a quick google search and found this thread over at Apple; apparently, other people are having the same problem. I’m headed to the Apple Store on wednesday, so I’ll have to ask why this is happening.
